ALEX GARDNER

Scottish Folk singer Alex Gardner, as his myspace quite clearly highlights, thinks he's the bee's knees. He is not. In fact there's so many "I love myself" photos all over the place and ridiculous quotes comparing him to the ever cool James Dean, it's hard to even realise that there is music playing. However, by then it's too late for Mr Gardner, I already don't care for him and the music does nothing to improve first impressions.

CALUM MACNAB
Scottish Folk, Alex Gardner - Yesterday's News

Yesterday's News is the indie/pop/love song done millions of times before, more recently by the bland James Blunt and the rubbish James Morrison. The last thing music needs right now is somebody else milking this style, but unfortunatly we have to suffer it. It's so unoriginal that it's annoying. Nothing is in this, nothing new anyway. It's all been done in the past for years, and it's all been done better. Dressing like a poor mans Pete Doherty and claiming that "The sound of a million melting young

hearts is almost tangible when he sings", really who does Alex Gardner think he is? With each song sounding like a below average Damien Rice cover version, and a middle of the road, routine performance on the BBC Introducing Stage at T in the Park 2009 it's difficult to imagine this guy getting anywhere. In fact, he appears so big headed I don't want him to. That may seem harsh, but with his lyrics concerning the "girl-I-love-but-she-doesn't-love-me-she-loves-the-bigger-stronger-guy-and-it makes-me-upset-so-I'll-try-to-woo-her-and-eventually-succeed" cliche, well basically listen to it and you'll understand. But it will destroy a little part of your soul, be warned.

The other songs on the myspace page
Picture Me Running and I've Tried add nothing more than if the tracks weren't there at all. It would seem that Mr Gardner hasn't tried hard enough, and even a mention of a "nasty mugging incident" struggles to make you feel for him. If everything goes to plan, Scottish Folk songster Alex Gardner will become moderately successful then fade into obscurity, however I pray and hope that he becomes yesterday's news today.
