APPLES

Pop / Pop / Pop. That's what genre apples claim to be on their myspace, and it's exactly what they are. With the traditional band line-up of guitar bass and drums backed with keys and brass sections, apples create perfect cheesy, uplifting, ska, pop music that should appeal to a large number of people. Basically, it's Vampire Weekend with the child-like excitement of Alphabeat thrown in for good measure and fun.

CALUM MACNAB
Apples Reason 45

Trumpets, synth and drums make up the introduction, with the lyrics joining fairly quickly. The lyrics could be seen as cliched, using themes that have been explored many times before, and just plain and utter rubbish ("I won't admit it/I'm on my own here, I'm on my own" and lots of "oohh aaohh"'s)...but this is pop music, nothing new should be expected here, just a combining of ideas from various sources which end up creating "Reason 45" which presumably is the "only reason I'm still around here". With various glowing reviews from The Guardian ("band of the day"), Q Magazine ("Track of the Day"), and BBC 6Music Breakfast Show ("Single of the Week") it's not hard to realise that this Hereford 5 piece has huge mainstream potential, potential that's already on the rise! And with more songs with the same light-hearted nature as "Reason 45", well you will be hearing apples very, very soon.

With comparisons being drawn to Madness, Vampire Weekend and even The Sun itself ("if sunshine had a sound this would definitely be it"), apples should be proud of the ground they've covered so far despite remaining unsigned. That said, there is a chance that they are "too cheesy" to gain much more critical acclaim, but kids and pop fans will lap it up without a care in the world. As a result, I'll be turning my back on them and we'll have to wait and see where they go from here, but from my point of view - they'll grow and fade in popularity relatively quickly. However, at the current moment, "People are screaming for apples".
