The curiously named track ‘Scheme Eugene’ almost sums up Red Light Company’s style; distinctly unique, unclassifiable in terms of genre, but certainly memorable. In terms of image and style they seem to fit into the alternative bracket rather well with their slightly rocky undertones. This organic sound is often overridden by the relentless vocal harmonies which such bands as Snow Patrol have used to create their own sound. Sometimes when you listen to Red Light Company you are urging them to let go and rock out.

‘Scheme Eugene’ has been named The Sun’s single of the week, and the bands performance at the BBC Electric Proms has created a fan base which has firmly placed them in the new music radar. They can be seen supporting such bands as the Pigeon Detectives, definitely a step in the right direction.

With a voice reminiscent of JJ72’s Mark Greaney, the song begins Frenneaux’s warbling tones coupled by a catchy melody, whilst the quite simplistic backing vocals seem to stick in your head uncannily. The chorus is a little predictable, but it is evocative and catchy. Lyrically the song isn’t claiming to be anything more than it is: a catchy alternative track. These qualities give ‘Scheme Eugene’ a mainstream feel, in parts the melodies seem quite generic, but this is not to criticise the imaginative amalgamation of sounds in their music. In the bridge we sense there is a rockier side of the band, but it is shortly overtaken by those catchy harmonies and slightly grating, yet oddly suited, sharp vocals.

Red Light Company are very much a band which have adopted a sound somewhat similar to the likes of Polyphonic Spree; they rely on a symphonic rock feel which boasts a certain choral quality. Signed by Lavolta Records (a record label still in its infancy) Red Light Company are amongst other raw new talents with something different to offer to the mainstream music scene.

Red Light Company are currently playing throughout the UK, they are taking in break from gigging in February but will be touring again from 7th March onwards.
